On Bainbridge Island, across the Puget Sound from Seattle, I am one of a small team of in-house illustrators working on projects under the studio's unannounced titles. My role at the studio consists of laying out panels, translating the script to sketches, placing the script, ballooning, lining pencils, laying flats, and painting the final art.
THE JETTY CATS
By Blayne Fox
EST PG COUNT: 180+
AGE RANGE: 9-14
COMP TITLES: Watership Down by Richard Adams, A Cat Story by Ursula Murray Husted, Firebringer by David Clement-Davies, the Warriors series by Erin Hunter
The Jetty Cats, a colony of feral cat named by the local rescue of Westport Washington–survived extinction to see the day they’d be celebrated as residents & pass of old age. Working in cat rescue for 5+ years and adopting out over 170+ cats through rehabilitation taught me the sad statistic for stray cats that don’t make good pets. Through my fictional characters, I hope to bring awareness to the fulfilling lives of feral cats, and the respect their existence deserves among us.
Based on a true story, The Jetty Cats tells the harrowing tale of a feral cat colony living on the jetty of Westport, Washington. When a gull named Gavan uncovers a bag full of kittens, his longtime foe–the roving tomcat Jasper–adopts them into his colony. Streetwise and battle-scarred, Jasper raises Benny & his siblings as his own, teaching them how to survive the flippancy of humans. Observing their growth, Gavan serves as an unlikely ally against the shifting winds when a crew of fishermen decides the cats overstayed their welcome. With the charm of Oliver & Company and the grit of the Warriors series, the tale of how a fishing town changes its minds from pest to pet is viewed through the eyes of a small cat with a big heart.

Dancing on Embers follows the queer coming-of-age of Giuseppe "Beppe" Barthelemucci during early WWII in Neive, Italy. Since the arrival of Coyote, a rugged American freedom fighter with a mysterious past, his grandfather's mission of building a resistance has proven complicated when his youngest grandson is falls for the enemy in disguise. To bring the Republic of Italy to Neive, the Barthelemuccis will face obstacles out of their darkest nightmares, and the price may be their very lives.
I ran Dancing on Embers as a webcomic on Smackjeeves for three years, and in that time it gained over 5k active readers/commenters. This community became the base of my illustration platform when the comic had to meet an end due to financial strains. While I've shelved this concept for now, the story and characters are dear to me as well as many others which is why I'd love to bring it back to life in the future.
